Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR)
Statewide Massachusetts
ATCO’s decades of experience made them the perfect partner to help the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation meet the state’s Decarbonization Initiative goals.
Challenge: Meeting statewide decarbonization goals while staying in budget
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) manages 450,000 acres of state parks throughout Massachusetts. ATCO has been DCR’s mechanical service provider since 2012.
In 2023, the Department of Conservation and Recreation Net Zero Task Force put a plan in place to decarbonize all of their DCR facilities. The ATCO team was asked to help complete an assessment of their existing heating systems in park facilities throughout the state and identify which fossil fuel systems could be replaced by air-sourced heat pumps.
Analysis and Solution
ATCO’s inventory and assessment revealed a variety of existing heating systems, including oil-fired, gas-fired, and propane-fired systems. ATCO then replaced this old equipment with new systems, including air handling units, furnaces, and Modine heaters and boilers. The ATCO team removed the old equipment from the site and transported leftover fuel to a local recycling facility.
Results
ATCO completed 17 installations over a three-month period, enabling DCR to meet their Decarbonization Initiatives for the year. The Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs recognized DCR at the 17th annual Leading by Example Awards.
